Winterize Your Home

New insulated water pipes

Pay less for hot water by insulating pipes. That can also help decrease the chance of pipes freezing, which can be disastrous. Check to see if your pipes are warm to the touch. If so, they are good candidates for insulation. (Use the same method to determine if your hot water heater would benefit from some insulation.)

You can get pre-slit pipe foam at most hardware stores. Cut it to size and fasten in place with duct tape. Ideally, choose the insulation with the highest R-value practical, which is a measure of its heat-blocking power. Pipe insulation is often R-3, or, for batt styles that you wrap around, a stronger R-7.

Why would a glass sliding door shatter spontaneously?

Broken Store Window

Window expert, says that pre-existing damage and imperfections are both factors in the doors’ spontaneous shattering, but what else could possibly caused this breakage.

Spontaneous glass breakage is a phenomenon by which toughened glass (or tempered) may spontaneously break without any apparent reason. The most common causes are:

– Minor damage during installation such as nicked or chipped edges later developing into larger breaks normally radiating from point of defect.
– Binding of the glass in the frame, causing stresses to develop as the glass expands and contracts due to thermal changes or deflects due to wind
– Internal defects within the glass such as nickel sulfide inclusions
– Thermal stresses in the glass
– Inadequate glass thickness to resist wind load

Home Invasion, Are You Safe?

Hands Picking Lock

In the United States and many other English speaking countries (though not the United Kingdom) home invasion is an illegal and usually forceful entry to an occupied, private dwelling with intent to commit a violent crime against the occupants, such as robbery, assault, rape, murder, or kidnapping.

In some jurisdictions, there is a defined crime of home invasion; in others, there is no crime defined as home invasion, but events that accompany the invasion are charged as crimes.

How Important is Home Painting?

How_Important_is_Home_Painting__

Why Is Home Painting So Important?

House painting is important for many reasons. Obviously, a good paint job beautifies and adds character and personality to your home. Just for that reason it’s important to take sufficient time planning which colors, shades, and paint styles you want to decorate your home with. But paint also serves as one of your home’s primary lines of defense against weather, insects and other damage, so it’s an important aspect of home maintenance to keep up on as well.

When to Paint?

There isn’t any set timeline when you should plan to re-paint your home. It varies depending on climate, the quality of paint that was previously applied, how thoroughly your home was prepped beforehand, and whether you hired a good painter. A poor paint job can last as little 3 years before it needs attention, and a good one can last for upwards of 20. The most important determining factor is the condition of home’s current coat. Is the paint chipped, cracked, flaking, or peeling anywhere? Are there areas of exposed wood or is there sign of water damage to either your siding or the paint itself? Finally, how does your home look? If you see any of the signs mentioned above, a new paint job is probably in order, but even if you don’t, you might still be ready for a change.

Remove Stains From a Plaster Swimming Pool

blurred surface view on blue swimming pool

There are three ways to remove stains of this type:

• The first is to attach an emery stone to your swimming pool cleaning pole and rub off the stain. While this method is the quickest and the easiest, it may not work, even with a lot of elbow grease. It is difficult to transfer a lot of force down the flexing pole to remove a stain. This method also tends to gouge the plaster and can leave a visible mark after the stain is removed.

• The second method is an old serviceman’s trick. Turn off your pump and wait for the water stop moving. Now, pour a small amount of granular chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) on top of the stain. Wait a couple of hours and the stain should bleach away. Note: In a few unique circumstances, this method can actually make a stain of its own. If you have a lot of stains, try one spot first and see how it works before pouring chlorine on all the stains.

If you are having problems getting the chlorine to stay on the stain because its on a slope, there is another variation of this method you can try. Pour about one quarter to one half pound of chlorine into a nylon panty hose. You can then tie a string at the top of the hose and lower it until the chlorine is right on top of the stain. Important: do not dip the panty hose with chlorine in and out of the pool. Granular chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) when in contact with small amounts of water can be explosive and flammable. Once you have immersed the chlorine, keep it in the water until it has dissolved.

• The third and best method for removing stains on a plastered pool requires getting in the pool. Not a bad option when it is hot! You will need some wet/dry sandpaper from the hardware store a reader tip – a product like Scotch Brite also works very well). It also helps to have a mask to make it easier to see. Using the sandpaper, you can sand off the stain. This method leaves a much smoother surface and a less noticeable result to your plaster. PLEASE do not try this with a power sander!

When in doubt, contact a pool professional to get rid of stains so you don’t damage the pool.

Choosing_The_Right_Towing_Services

Did you know that flatbed towing is one of the safest ways to transfer an automobile? Towing with dollies or a tow bar can be extremely annoying and not convenient, mainly if you’re attempting it on your own. A flatbed tow truck is a motor vehicle with a flat bed trailer and the trailer tilts and then your vehicle is safely pulled onto the trailer with the help of a chain wrench.

Flat bed tow trucks, are designed for secure fastening and easy transportation to make certain that the well-being of your car, truck, or boat is at all times in good hands.
